Openly described a 'realist romantic', Rob Ryan is well known for his intricate Paper Cut artwork. He has produced many designs for Paul Smith, as well as numerous book covers for Penguin (including the deeply dark and sinister The Book Of Lost Things by John Connelly, which I am currently reading) and has also had work commissioned by Vogue, Fenchurch, Amelia's Magazine and Liberty Store.
On one hand, his highly decorative cut-outs and screen prints of loving couples holding hands, families gathered together, church bells, boats and birds are almost too sweet and sentimental. It is only when you set your eyes to read the words or sentences amoung these images that dark, even fearful undertones show themselves producing a very stark contrast.
September saw the release of Rob's first book, This Is for You, the tale of a man who has lost his place in the world and sets out on an enchanting journey to rediscover his sense of belonging.
